The Media Freedom Situation in Serbia: an assessment for AEJ Congress by an experienced media trainer

Rick Thompson, a former chairman of the AEJ’s UK Section, has trained many journalists at public broadcasting stations in Serbia over the past seven years. He offers this outsider’s assessment of the fast-changing media landscape there – including the enduring problems of political interference, lack of transparency of media ownership, and the dependency of many outlets dependent on state aid or political/business interests; as well as the latest moves towards a new media law which will help to define the future relationship between Serbia’s media and its politicians.
